using between function in oracle -

I have already searched over the Internet that what is the logic in Oracle when using between functions in a string, but Do not think so or understand it.

For example. 

  Select one with double where 'M 9-W' between 'M9-W' and 'M9 9 9 9'. > 
 Why will not the question above return a line?  
 Can anyone please explain?

 string comparison is based on alphabetical order  M9W  between spectrum  M9W0A0  and  M9W9Z9 . Alphabetically, it comes before both. In alphabetical order, this is any string  M9W & lt; & Lt; Here comes before any letter (>); & Gt; .
